Bedford Half Marathon - December 14th

He did it! After the interruption to a storming run at Gosport, Scott destroyed his pb at Bedford with an excellent run.

"Very cold day but great course - I lloved it. Some long hills and 800 mtr up hill to finish, and a nice black sweat shirt to finish with; worth the trip alone? Good course for PB, but hard . Had a good strong run at last, that pb had to come and it did 1.23.18 , 2.24 quicker than the last."

Hogsback 8 and a bit - December 14th

Simon Black reports:

"Uphill for 3.5 miles and then downhill and flat for 4 miles before a rise to the finish. The Hogs Back rises 300 feet in 3k, so it’s quite a brutal tough start, but worth a look if you want a quality field (winner did 41:38!!!)"

Grimm Challenge - December 7th

The Grimm is a long-standing and very popular 8 mile offroad challenge around Army land near Aldershot. It’s tough: running, mud, assault course, and a bit more mud for good measure. And on this cold Sunday, quite a bit of "oh my God, I wish I’d stayed in bed" water to awaken the senses!

Marathone di Firenze - November 30th

All Claude’s hard work paid off as he ran an excellent 3:35:25 on his first attempt. Starting in cold and wet conditions from the Piazzale Michelangiolo, a steady start gave way to quick and consistent running until 30km in where many people struggled in the long and desolate Parco delle Cascine. Fortunately Claude rallied and finished in fine style!

Gosport Half Marathon - November 16th

A somewhat disappointing run from Scott, who is worth much better than the 1:28:15 he ran.

The full story of Scott’s run has now emerged: far from being a disappointing run, Scott was well inside his pb pace at 5m, but stopped for around 6 minutes to help a runner who was having an asthma attack. As Scott himself said, he simply could not have gone on running knowing that he could be helping. Such a selfless act deserves the highest praise, and surely a pb at his next race!

Amsterdam Marathon - October 19th

Updated 20th October to give more info on Andy’s great run

Andy Cooney had a storming run to finish 51st overall and first MV40 in a new pb (and obviously a club record) of 2:37:41. Yep, that’s right - a Dasher won the MV40 prize at a large international marathon! His first 38k varied only by 35s per 5k, which is brilliantly steady running, especially when you consider how windy it was coming back. Andy’s time ranks him as the 19th fastest MV40 in the country this year.

Mark Colley had a good run too, but unfortunately couldn’t on the day fulfil his undoubted potential, with a promising 1:53 at halfway falling away to a disappointing 4:05

Virginia Water Paddle - October 12th

Scott Hepburn put his disappointing run at the Windsor Half Marathon behind him to stroll away from everyone else, leading home James, Ross and Tony by almost a minute. Unusually, the first two men recorded significant negative splits, and further back Dave Priddy was a good 40s faster on the second lap! Pace judgement of the day came from Ross though, with a scant 5s difference between laps.

Elaine was the first lady home, well clear of "the late" Lucy Bucky, as she is sometimes known, after pulling a long way clear of Mike May in the second lap. Lucy was in good company today though as there were a number of late starters.

So what are the final positions in the championship? Tune in later, and all will be revealed…

Ridgeway Run - October 12th

Gorgeous weather, and the loveliest of courses. It was simply a spectacular day in the Chilterns, and while high temperatures perhaps kept times down a little, they certainly kept the spirits up! Not one for people who like flat courses though, as the 15km mainly offroad race is generally heading up or down, and possesses one or two hills to make you breathe a little. A very friendly race, with 450 runners and lots of local faces. Generous prizes too!

y.t was pleased to complete the race well in the middle of a long marathon training run, while Andrew Hug expressed a little disappointment at not breaking the 90-minute barrier.

Macclesfield Half Marathon - Sept 28th

Andy Cooney shrugged off the disappointment of a poor performance at Bristol a couple of weeks previous to storm to 1:16:54 and a new MV40 club record by over 3 minutes. He finished an excellent 6th overall and 2nd MV40.

Tough 10 - Sept 28th

A slightly shorter course than last year, but still, er, tough. Plenty of sore legs this morning, I imagine, for those who braved a picturesque misty morning in Bramshill Forest. Unfortunately it was a very poorly attended event with only 44 finishers.

Windsor Half - Sept 21st

Phew, what a hot one! The heat took its toll on many runners today, and sabotaged a few pb attempts, but there were still strong runs, and still a good number of pb’s. Congratulations to everyone who ran.

Ashtead 10k - Sept 14th

A lovely offroad run with one or two lumps and bumps to tackle - clearly Jo took a liking to it, finishing as the second lady overall!

Bristol Half Marathon - Sept 14th

A beautiful west country morning for running, with a chilly start warming to a sunny finish. Despite Bristol’s hilliness, the course is generally flat, with just a few inclines over bridges, but the twistiness towards the end can take its toll on tired legs.

Andy Cooney celebrated his first race as a veteran with a solid 1:20 (a marathon training run?), while Sian came close to her pb with a good 2:07. Your humble webmaster was glad that the course was better sign-posted than his journey the night before, and was a bit heavy legged after a late night and far too much driving!

Windle Valley Relay - Sept 6th

A stirling effort from our 9th-placed team at the short but sweet offroad marathon relay. The 2.6 mile course is testing when dry, so the recent conditions made it somewhat slower than normal.

Running very freely and easily, Jules Algar won the monthly blow-out by an incredible 2 minute margin! There were numerous pb’s, testament to the effect of good, consistent training - and the promise of a drink!

Yateley 10k race 3 - August 6th

[Apologies for the recent lack of updates to the website; I’ve had some technical difficulties and a distinct lack of time to sort them out!].

When you run Yateley you’re often dripping wet due to torrential rain, but this time it was the torrid heat and humidity that caused the drips. The first three men home claimed not to be racing, despite Scott slashing almost a minute off his pb! Doug & Kate Galbraith said goodbye to Blighty with solid runs, Claude had a stormer to record his quickest run of the series, and Mel chased our esteemed chairman all the way to the line!

Jean had the most eventful evening after a fall which left her with cut hands. Hopefully it’s nothing serious and she’ll be back in time to clean up at teh Jim Banks handicap! :)

Woodland 5m race 3 - July 26th

A good turn out for this club-championship race; slightly over its advertised 5m, the undulating course around Crowthorne Woods is unforgiving and really quite tough. Congratulations to all who ran, especially to Simon B and Scott who were just outside the top ten, and to Elaine who was the 4th senior lady to finish.

High Wycombe Half Marathon - July 20th

High Wycombe isn’t known for its flatness, and the abominable hill between 2 and 3 miles of the half marathon really is somewhat testing. Once you’re past that though, it’s a very pleasant gently undulating race. With everyone starting together in a group, with Scott and Chris B providing drinks and words of encouragement.

Jo Griffiths excelled at her first half, starting sensibly and gradually picking up the pace, before unleashing an excellent last 3 miles that clearly demonstrated how much she can improve on her time. Next came Colin Adams, closely followed by Scott, and Mark Colley who suffered mid-race but came back strongly to come in just a few seconds under his target time. Mike May didn’t push himself, but came home just a few moments later.

BUPA Great Capital Run - July 20th

Neil Potter reports…

I ran the Bupa Great Capital Run 10k on Sunday morning in Hyde Park. My time was 39.01 and that’s a PB for me. I finished 80th out of 11,500 runners so am very pleased!

The race is really well organised and had a great atmosphere…… I can highly recommend it.

Datchet 5k - July 15th

Many thanks for everyone who helped by marshalling, organising, or by bringing food - and we still managed to get 30-odd runners!

Congratulations to Jon & Mel on their big day!

Runnymede Relays - June 28th

A beautiful day and a beautiful setting, with both teams enjoying themselves and acquitting themselves extremely well in the heat. The boys (Claude Autrey, Chris Hunt, Colin Adams, Brent Curless, Ross McDonough and Chris B) finished an excellent 10th of the 46 teams, and the girls (Jo Griffiths, Kim Moxham, Olivia Feek, Steph Molloy, Elaine Culverwell and Laura Noctor) came a very respectable 37th, beating several men-only teams in the process!

Purple Patch QM Reservoir Races - June 17th

The second set of races in this three-race 5 & 10k series, situated at the local, beautiful but also somewhat windy Queen Mother reservoir in Horton. The race takes place around the outside of the reservoir, and affords unique views of the Thames and Colne Valleys.

The course is pancake flat and potentially extremely fast, although the wind can be a problem and the run is on a trail/track rather than a tarmac surface. The winning times have been quite modest so far, so there are prizes to be had! The last race is on July 15th - see http://www.purplepatchrunning.com/races.php

Wargrave 10k - June 15th

The undulating Wargrave 10k course lived up to its reputation of being tough but fast on a lovely day for running. Congratulations to Joyce Clark who was the second lady over 55 in the Berkshire Championships. I’m sure Joyce won’t mind me pointing out that she’s a few days over 55 years old, so this is no mean feat!

Shinfield 10k - May 5th

The first really warm day of the year, and lot of personal bests. Have we ever been to a race where two-thirds of our runners got personal bests? (see the note below about this).

Your humble webmaster returned to form with his best time for a few years, closely followed by Simon who recorded a huge 2 minute pb (and a 5k pb en route), and James who recorded a pb too.

First lady home in a huge pb - but by her own admission - in a slightly disappointing time, was Jo Logie who placed 38th overall and 5th lady.

Doug and Dave P both made the top 100, both with pb’s - Dave P continuing his steady trot-to-the-top with a massive two-and-a-half minute pb! 10k, and indeed race, debutant Eric Lemann came next with an excellent 45:46 clocking. Eric found getting the right pace difficult (don’t we all!) so this solid debut bodes well for the future.

Mel was next, with Sunita not far behind potentially setting a new FV45 10k best.

The last, but by no means least, runner home was Mitch Clark who has returned to club colours after a break of a few years. Welcome back Mitch!

Brief aside: the race start was moved from last year, and the course diverted due to expected roadworks. All the Garmin users whom I spoke to afterwards measured the race at between 9.85 and 9.90km, and a quick measure using Google Earth indicates that the course was in the order of 100m short.

Divided Dash - April 29th

Many thanks to everyone who ran in, erm, difficult conditions. We hope that you enjoyed it, and can forgive us the problems that can arise with this sort of event. If you have ideas on how we can improve the event, please let us know via the link at the top or bottom of this page.

First off, respect and thanks to Alan Gray, Rob Lane and Will McAree who all ran twice, with Alan only 2s slower on his second leg, and Will only 5s down. Their selfless committment allowed their teams to run when members were unable to make it, and certainly made my life easier!

Team 3 (Rhiann Coles, Nneka Okonta and Will McAree running twice) were the fastest team on the night in a sprightly 41:25, Kate Galbraith was the fastest lady on the night in 10:30, and Simon Black was the fastest man in 8:44.

The overall winners once the handicaps were applied were team 6 (James Street, Jonathon Mendelssohn, Charlotte Glazzard, Barbara Mason). The fastest woman by handicap was Nneka, and the fastest man Berkeley Greene.

So how do I work out the handicaps and the results? That would be telling, but you can look at the full, detailed results in this handy Excel spreadsheet.

Bracknell Half Marathon - April 27th

Bracknell is a new town with an old reputation for being a bit of a concrete jungle, so it’s always pleasantly surprising to find that its half-marathon is decidely pleasant and green - if hilly! The course takes in lots of cycle paths, a good few underpasses, and many of Bracknell’s undulations. Which makes Sian’s run even more pleasing, as she gained a new pb!

Flora London Marathon - April 13th

Perfect conditions, with only a short squally shower to spoil things around 2 hours in, led to some brilliant times. Well done to everyone who ran! More details will appear later in the week (once your spectating webmaster has defrosted and dried-out!).

If you have any photos from the day, please bring them to the club or to Charlie’s Horse on Monday night so I can copy them to my laptop and add them to the website!

Thanks to Dave Priddy, there’s now a breakdown of our runners’ performances (Excel spreadsheet).

Connemara Half Marathon - April 6th

"As hilly as Swanage" summarizes the very beautiful course on the West Coast of Ireland. Tom and Elaine might not have picked the course for it’s pb potential, but both recorded personal bests anyway, with an excellent 1:39 clocking from Tom, and a stonking 1:40 from Elaine!

Apologies - March 18th

I just noticed that the "sortable tables" weren’t working, because once-upon-a-time I’d typed "Sortable" instead of "sortable". Sigh. Anyway, I fixed it, so click on the column heading of a table to sort by that column. If you’re lucky, clicking it again will sort in the reverse order, but that might not work in some web browsers.

Bath half marathon - March 16th

I ran the Bath Half at the weekend and was pleased with the time given that it was cold and wet and the race delayed for an hour because someone had forgotten the medical marquee!!!

I wonder if Dave and Scott felt like the giraffe who used to be in the BA ads: where is everybody? Well done to them both for turning up, and having good runs!

Unsurprisingly the men’s finished 11th of 13, and the ladies joint last.

Keith Rogers nipped out of the office and down the Edgeware road to record an excellent 19:47 for this lunchtime favourite.

Reading Half Marathon - March 2nd

A biting wind in the second half slowed most people. But pb’s were still in evidence, as Kathryn and Rob’s times show, so let me know if you got one!

Updated in the wee small hours as I missed a few people. Why do races publish their results in such crappy formats? And why do my legs ache so much? Sigh :(

Meon Valley Plod - Feb 17th

Ultra-man (Chris Hunt!) reports:

The Meon Valley Plod is around 20 miles long and mostly off road in the Southdowns near Horndean. The leg-sapping hills and muddy conditions resulted in marathon equaling times but was made up for by the stunning views and superb race organisation from Portsmouth Joggers. Special mention goes to the two stations with mounds of cake and jelly babies.

Overall: Very tough but highly recommended.

Chris ran a very good 3:17:19 for 109th place.

Wokingham Half Marathon - Feb 10th

Perfect conditions and a fast, flat course led to so many pb’s that it’s difficult to know where to start (Cantley Park, I hear some witty souls say. I’ll deal with you later).

Leading the charge home was Simon Black who ran an impressive 1:21:40 despite not feeling great; it’s a pity that he wasn’t able to do himself full justice after training and racing so well recently. He was closely followed by two of the men who have spent the whole winter improving, Will and Scott. Colin and Neil also made it under 1:30, with Ross and Doug just missing out.

Dave Priddy put in possibly the best performance of the year so far, with a huge pb of 1:31. His recent fitness improvements and dedication to training showed today, and he took full advantage of the great conditions.

First lady home was Lucy who beat two-thirds of the men in the club in recording a very good 1:34:28, although it was some way off her best time. Next was Denisa, who is returning to something like the form that she showed this time last year. Then came Rhian who took 10 minutes off her pb in a single race! If she can continue to improve at this rate, Lucy will get a sore neck from looking over her shoulder! :-)

I’ve marked the pb’s that I know about. I was in the middle of my own long run when I spoke to Simon, so if any of them are wrong, or any of the information above is, please let me know! (link at the top of the page).

Bushy Park Time trial - Jan 26th

A sprightly Saturday morning run around Bushy Park always blows the cobwebs away, although the windy weather put paid to any fast times.

Another pb for Jon - let’s hope his achilles holds together and lets him sustain this period of rapid improvement.

Tadley XC - Jan 6th

On a proper cross-country course that was sadly lacking the usual ploughed field, the club had one of it’s best results ever with the men’s team finishing 3rd! That’s not happened since about 1999 at Ruislip, if I remember correctly. The ladies fared a little worse with several of the quicker runners missing, and finished 8th. Overall we finished 4th though, so well done to everyone who ran, both scorers and non-scorers!

Berkshire XC championships - Jan 5th 2008

So close and yet so far! 4 boring laps of Upton Park, but a surprising and pleasing 2nd place overall and a county vest for Chris B. Thanks to Jon Elliot and Mel ‘n’ Rich for their support! [I managed to break my watch during the race, so no time taken!].
